Koi Identification

The NWKGC, ZNA NW Chapter, has elected to follow the koi classifications set forth by ZNA.

Group 1

Koi included in Group 1 include the Gosanke varieties of  Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoku (Sanke), Showa Sanshoku (Showa), and Utsurimono varieties.  All Ginrin of the 4 varieties are also included in Group 1.

Kohaku

Classic red and white Nishikigoi. Red should start at the head and form interesting patterns along the tops and sides of the body. Fins should be white.

Sanke

Taisho Sanshoku, also know at Sanke, are koi that have black (Sumi) and Red (Beni or Hi) patterns on a white body.   The black is small spots and has a red pattern like a Kohaku.

Showa

Showa Sanshoku, or Showa for short, are koi that have black (Sumi), Red (Beni), and White (Shiroji).  The sumi will develop over the head and have large patterns.  The Beni (Red) will have a Kohaku pattern.

Utsurimono

Utsurimo  have only one of three colors on a black background (Sumi).  White (Shiro Utsuri), Red (Hi Utsuri), and Yellow (Ki Utsuri).  The colored patterns will be spread throughout the koi, including on the head.

Asagi

Asagi are covered in a blue/white net-like reticular pattern and their head should be light blue, clear, and unblemished.

The abdomen, pectoral fins, and cheeks should be deep orange or red.

Shusui

Shusui is the Doitsu version of the Asagi

Have a neatly arranged line of dark-blue scales along the dorsal line, on a pale-blue skin.

The head should be light-blue and it should have red on the cheeks

Bekko

Solid body colored koi with black markings.

Aka Bekko: A red koi with some black pattern.
Ki Bekko: A yellow koi with some black markings.
Shiro Bekko: A white koi with some black markings.

Has markings on their backs only.

Head should be free of black markings
